What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a daily topic of discussion in the field of traditional aesthetics. For many people, especially women, the “imperfections” caused by cellulite are a very sensitive issue. For this reason, I want to explain in a simple and clear way what cellulite is, clarify how to approach it, and raise awareness about the importance of prevention.

In my previous article, “Preventing Cellulite at Home,” which you can comfortably read on my website Wellnessaround.com, I talked a lot about awareness: better understanding this phenomenon to prevent it properly.

WHAT IS CELLULITE?

Cellulite is a disorder of adipose tissue, and the technical term for it is Edematous-Fibrosclerotic Panniculopathy. It is a condition in which fat cells enlarge and accumulate excess fluids. This altered balance in the tissues causes a slowdown in the physiological processes of the lymphatic and venous systems.

TYPES OF CELLULITE

There are three types of cellulite:

  • Edematous cellulite: This type occurs when there is an accumulation of fluids in the adipose tissue, usually in the thighs, knees, ankles, calves, and arms. The tissues appear swollen and sometimes painful.

  • Fibrous cellulite: In this phase, connective tissue increases and hardens the fat tissue, forming visible nodules. It is also known as “orange peel skin.”

  • Sclerotic cellulite: Here, cellulite becomes more advanced, developing harder nodules (macronodules), which can be painful to the touch. At this stage, cellulite is called liposclerosis.

Cellulite can manifest differently at various stages and, when developed in its final stages, can cause pain and discomfort. Pain is an important factor for accurate diagnosis and treatment guidance.

HOW TO DEFINE CELLULITE IN SIMPLE WORDS?

Here is a brief description of the different types of cellulite explained more simply:

  • Compact cellulite: Generally affects people with good physical shape. The most affected areas are the thighs, knees, and buttocks. It feels hard to the touch but is rarely painful and is often linked to venous and lymphatic circulation problems.

  • Soft cellulite: Typical of middle-aged people with looser tissue. It is mainly located on the thighs and arms.

  • Edematous cellulite: Manifests with noticeable fluid retention, especially on the buttocks, and can give the skin a swollen, “spongy” appearance. Sometimes it is painful and may be associated with poor circulation.

WHAT CAUSES CELLULITE?

To better understand how to prevent cellulite, it is important to know the main causes, which we can divide into three categories:

  • Constitutional factors: Genetics play a fundamental role. If your family members had cellulite problems, you are more likely to develop it too.

  • Determinant factors: Primarily hormones. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those related to the menstrual cycle, significantly influence cellulite formation in women.

  • Aggravating factors: These are linked to daily behaviors and habits. The main aggravating factors include poor venous and lymphatic circulation, an unbalanced diet, alcohol and smoking, poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, wearing tight clothes, and, of course, stress.

PREVENTING CELLULITE: WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Now that you know the main causes of cellulite, it’s important to understand how to prevent and tackle it. There are several preventive treatments that can help limit cellulite onset, such as:

  • Lymphatic drainage massages

  • Connective tissue massages

  • Pressotherapy

  • Mesotherapy

  • Iontophoresis

These treatments can help contain cellulite but must be combined with a healthy lifestyle. Awareness of the problem is essential for correct prevention and management.

CONCLUSIONS

Cellulite is a complex and widely discussed problem, but we must not forget the importance of massage as the main tool for prevention and treatment. It is essential to act consciously to effectively address and prevent this disorder.
