Hands and Feet, a forward-thinking vision

When well-being begins with what we often ignore
“In the human body, hands and feet are the extremities. But in ancient wisdom, they are the beginning of change.”
— Ayurvedic tradition (passed down orally, rarely cited)
Have you ever noticed how, when something feels “off,” we instinctively bring our hands to our face… or feel the urge to take off our shoes?
That’s not a coincidence.
Hands and feet are true gateways of the human body. Undervalued, ignored, often taken for granted—yet so rich in wisdom, connection, and sensitivity.
Through my work with Wellnessaround, I’ve learned that deep well-being doesn’t always start in the mind. Sometimes it begins much further down… or further outward.
That’s why today I want to talk to you about what lies “at the edges” — and can bring you back to your center.

In the hands and feet: an ancient memory
In many traditional cultures, hands and feet were considered sacred.
-
In Egypt, it was believed that the soul could exit through the feet during deep sleep
-
In India, the feet of spiritual teachers are still today washed and honored as a gesture of gratitude
-
In ancient Greece, hands were a symbol of truth and revelation: an open palm showed the absence of deceit
Curiosity:
In Taoism, it is said that “the hands speak with the sky, the feet with the earth” — and only when the two listen to each other does the body find its balance.
Not just skin: endings, connections, emotions
Did you know that hands and feet each contain over 7,000 nerve endings?
They are among the most sensitive areas of the human body, and every stimulation — even slight — sends direct signals to the central nervous system.
That’s why:
-
A touch on the hands can calm the mind in seconds
-
A foot massage can influence digestion or sleep
-
Working on hands and feet releases deep tensions without even touching the back
And yet, they are often the most neglected parts.
The hands: touch, communication, and identity
The hands allow us to act, communicate, give, and receive.
When I work with the hands during a massage, I always notice how much “memory” they carry:
Tension, fatigue, held-back emotions.
But also care, love, the need for connection.
Did you know?
The palm of the hand is considered an active energetic center in some schools of Chinese medicine and Reiki. By warming or massaging it, you stimulate points connected to the heart, the diaphragm, and a calm mind.
The feet: roots, balance, and truth
The feet are our foundation.
But not only that: they are also perceptive antennas connecting us to the world, the ground, reality.
When I work with the feet, I can hear how they “speak.” Sometimes an area feels cold, sometimes rigid, sometimes still. And it’s precisely from there that we can understand so much about the entire body.
The sole of the foot contains a connective tissue called the plantar fascia, which is connected to the entire fascial system of the body.
Tension there can influence the pelvis, posture, and even one’s mood.
Amazing, isn’t it? …

A small practice to try… with me or on your own
I’ll leave you with a small daily gesture you can do on your own (or during one of our sessions together):
“Listen to your body through hands and feet” – Centering exercise
-
Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the ground, hands on your thighs
-
Close your eyes and bring attention to your hands: feel the warmth? The shape? The skin?
-
Then shift attention to your feet: feel the weight? The contact? The support?
-
Breathe for 2 minutes, bringing your awareness to these four extremities
-
When you open your eyes, notice what has changed
A very simple exercise that brings presence, calm, and centeredness in just a few minutes.
